MORE WOMEN IN COLLEGE THAN MEN

Because more women than men go to college it is not a barometer for equality. When men and women go head-to-head in workplace situations, the man will usually win. What is going on? Why is the old-boys network” still perpetuated? I strongly feel the disparity is embedded into our mind-set from near birth for both men and women and perpetuated throughout life, no matter how much we trumpet women’s equality. I have promoted the concept in the past and do it even more strongly now – females are treated differently with different expectations.

They are still socialized to be the nurturers even with careers and working full-time. Assertiveness in a woman is appalling to many. As for men, parents are reluctant to encourage sensitivity and empathy because it is identified as sissy with underlying implications in our society of homosexuality. That puts pressure on men to think female traits are bad representations of masculinity. I think it is indicative of greater masculinity if a man is brave enough to express the feminine side within himself.

Society at large must be made aware of this subtle but dangerous role delineation. At this particular time, the notion is downplayed and thought to be outdated. NOT BY A LONG SHOT! It is rather imperceptible and hidden from view, but it still continues to be a destructive force.

Children’s stories, fables, poems and the like tend to favor male heroes while females are the helpers. Yes, I know there are female heroes BUT they are usually sexy and scantily clad.

Can we eliminate the tendency to stereotype? I hope so but it will take lots of work.
